"Act
well your part; there all the honor lies" -- Alexander Pope Meetings
are typically held the first Thursday of every month unless otherwise
announced! Feel free to join us at anytime during the year. The International Thespian Society includes schools around the world who have pledged themselves to "act well their parts, therein all the honor lies." It is an honor society dedicated to promoting excellence in high school theatre. Students earn membership in ITS by earning ten or more points through service in their high school theatre, including work both onstage and backstage. As students accrue additional points, they become eligible for honor thespian status. More than two million students have become Thespians since 1929, including such notable celebrities as American Idol Kelly Clarkson, John Goodman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sharon Stone, and Tom Hanks, and many more. The
drama club meets at least once a month-- keep an eye out for meeting
announcements or check the drama call board outside the auditorium.

The story of the Cappies ... • The Cappies program began in the fall of 1999 and was co-founded by Bill Strauss, of McLean, also a founder of the Capitol Steps political satire group, and Judy Bowns, a theater arts resource teacher with Fairfax County Public Schools. • Strauss said that, in the wake of the shootings at Columbine High School earlier in 1999, he was looking for a way to “celebrate the positive things that teenagers do,” particularly in the field of arts. • The Cappies started with 14 high schools. • The National Capital Area program has grown to include more than 50 public, private, and parochial high schools in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. • The Cappies program now involves more than 3,000 national capital area students. • Cappies programs have started spreading across the U.S.A. • Community newspapers, like The Times, and daily newspapers, like The Washington Post, regularly publish Cappies reviews, written by student critics. • Newspapers, such as The Times, run fall and spring high school theater pullout sections, and photo spreads of nominees, just like they do for sports. • In late spring, critics vote for Cappie awards. Five nominees are selected in each of 35 categories, along with four commendees per school. • Each year, more than 200 students receive honors of some kind. The “Cappie” awards are presented, by local V.I.P.s, at a Cappies Gala at Kennedy Center. • In the summer, top Cappie winners from across the U.S. participate in the Cappies National Theater also at the Kennedy Center. |
