INTERNATIONAL THESPIAN SOCIETY TINTERNATIONAL THESPIAN SOCIETY
TROUPE 4328

"Act well your part; there all the honor lies" -- Alexander Pope

Click HERE to meet the 2008-2009 ITS Officers!

Meetings are typically held the first Thursday of every month unless otherwise announced! Feel free to join us at anytime during the year.

What is I.T.S.?

The International Thespian Society includes schools around the world who have pledged themselves to "act well their parts, therein all the honor lies." It is an honor society dedicated to promoting excellence in high school theatre. Students earn membership in ITS by earning ten or more points through service in their high school theatre, including work both onstage and backstage. As students accrue additional points, they become eligible for honor thespian status. More than two million students have become Thespians since 1929, including such notable celebrities as American Idol Kelly Clarkson, John Goodman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sharon Stone, and Tom Hanks, and many more.

The drama club meets at least once a month-- keep an eye out for meeting announcements or check the drama call board outside the auditorium.

The ITS Point System information is available here. Ten points are needed to become a member of ITS.

I.T.S. Student Membership Benefits:
• One-year subscription to Dramatics (9 issues), renewable at a discounted rate
• Membership card & certificate
• ITS Honor cord to wear at Graduation

• Eligibility for Thespian scholarship programs and other benefits throughout high school; name permanently kept on membership rolls at the home office.
• A star will be by members names in our theatre production programs

CAPPIES
Each year DC area high schools select one show to be a Cappies show. We will have area Cappies critics attend our Cappies show and afterwards each critic will will submit a 300-400 word review. The best reviews will be selected for publication in area newspapers, including The Washington Post.

The Cappies may also select performers and technicians from each show for possible awards that can range from Best Musical to Best Costumes, etc. In 2004, The Boyfriend received nine Cappies nominations, including Best Song. The cast was invited to perform “The Rivera” at the Kennedy Center during the Cappies Gala.

CAPPIE Nominees for 2008's High School Musical:
Congratulations to Ally Foreman
Ally is a Cappie Nominee for Best Comic Actress for her role as Ms. Darbus in
High School Musical

Commendees:
Teddy Kavros
Christina Manzo
Charlotte Bates
Maria Wallace

CAPPIE Nominees for 2007's Li'l Abner:
Nominations are determined by the 302 voting critics, who evaluated 26 plays and 29 musicals and voted in 33 categories. There are 185 nominations spread among 55 schools.

It's very hard to earn a Cappie nomination. In most cases, it means critics placed a candidate among roughly the top one-fifth in your category. That's like being all-district in sports. Every year, some schools get few (or no) nominations. This doesn't mean we didn't have a fine show, or a great year for our theater program. All it means is that at this particular show, the critics didn't find anything they would put in the top one-fifth.
Nominees:
Comic Actor:
Nana Amoah, Jr.
Featured Actress:
Christina Manzo
Featured Actor:
Spencer Peterson

Costumes:
Ally Foreman, Elise Glad, Christina Manzo

Commendees:
Andrew O'Neal
Justin Ahdoot
Ginny Collins
Charlotte Bates

CAPPIE NOMINEES for 2006 Arsenic and Old Lace:

With 56 shows (24 musicals, 32 plays): we congratulate the Edison students who received nominations AND congratulations to ALL Drama students for a GREAT year!

The story of the Cappies ...

• The Cappies program began in the fall of 1999 and was co-founded by Bill Strauss, of McLean, also a founder of the Capitol Steps political satire group, and Judy Bowns, a theater arts resource teacher with Fairfax County Public Schools.

• Strauss said that, in the wake of the shootings at Columbine High School earlier in 1999, he was looking for a way to “celebrate the positive things that teenagers do,” particularly in the field of arts.

• The Cappies started with 14 high schools.

• The National Capital Area program has grown to include more than 50 public, private, and parochial high schools in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

• The Cappies program now involves more than 3,000 national capital area students.

• Cappies programs have started spreading across the U.S.A.

• Community newspapers, like The Times, and daily newspapers, like The Washington Post, regularly publish Cappies reviews, written by student critics.

• Newspapers, such as The Times, run fall and spring high school theater pullout sections, and photo spreads of nominees, just like they do for sports.

• In late spring, critics vote for Cappie awards. Five nominees are selected in each of 35 categories, along with four commendees per school.

• Each year, more than 200 students receive honors of some kind. The “Cappie” awards are presented, by local V.I.P.s, at a Cappies Gala at Kennedy Center.

• In the summer, top Cappie winners from across the U.S. participate in the Cappies National Theater also at the Kennedy Center.
