Everyday events occur… everyday. If they’re so regular, then why do our stomachs twist when we finally sit down and think about them? It is because though the situation was normal, the experience went against our inner drive to live life creating motions, not just going through the motions. “Hostage” is an interpretative examination of nine students and the differences between their group mentality, situations, and experiences. However this ultimately leads to the question of what will happen when those three ideas clash?

Taking place in modern day time, Mindful Prisons is an original poetic work written by Shelby Moran. The lines of free verse explore the internal prisons of four characters: Cold, Widow, Abused, and Addicted. Struggling with familiar issues, the characters tell their unique, heart-wrenching tales—reminiscing on their past and discussing what has brought them to their dim present's. As the characters relive their tales, they prove their ability to free themselves of their prisons or inability to escape their confinement. Symbolizing the variety of issues that individuals face on a day to day basis, the characters reveal that everyone is responsible for their personal 'prisons'. Because of this, it is the individual's responsibility to find solutions to the tribulations that they face. "The strong. The willed. The brave. The few. The free" —those are the ones who escape and attain ultimate salvation.
